The Mendel Museum of MU (MM)
Do you know why one of the largest squares in Brno is named after Mendel? The square provides direct access to the garden of the Old Brno Abbey, which has existed for almost 700 years. One of the world’s greatest pioneers of genetics lived and worked here. A man whose diligence, perseverance, and universality continues to inspire to this day. Come and discover the humble genius of Gregor Johann Mendel.
Approximate duration of the tour: 30 minutes
The Garden and Apiary
Explore the mid-nineteenth century abbey garden, which Mendel observed from the window of his room. Inspect the foundations of the old greenhouse and the place where the orangery stood. Stroll under the blossoming branches of the false acacias that nourished Mendel’s bees. Absorb the soothing silence, away from the bustle of the city.
Approximate duration of the tour: 45 minutes
The circuit is only available from April to October (weather permitting) and must be booked ahead of time.
The Basilica and Augustinian Library
Immerse yourself into the hallowed serenity of the Basilica of the Assumption of Our Lady and be invigorated by the vaults that echoed to music performed by Leoš Janáček. The tour will take you to see the famous Black Madonna, the tomb of the monastery’s founder, Elizabeth Richeza, or the abstract stained-glass windows in stark contrast to the Neo-Gothic architecture. The richly ornamented Baroque library contains nearly 27,000 volumes, from rare early prints to detective novels. You will also visit the Mendel Refectory, the Cloister, and the old Cistercian refectory.
Only available with a guide, must be booked ahead of time. Visitors to the basilica must be suitably dressed.
