Explore the Mendel Museum of Masaryk University in Brno
The Mendel Museum of Masaryk University builds on the legacy of G. J. Mendel. It is a meeting place for experts and a centre for presenting the findings of science and research to the broader public. Besides maintaining an exhibition about G. J. Mendel, the museum also organises numerous lectures, primarily on genetics but also on other disciplines taught at Masaryk University.
Internationally renowned lectures at the Mendel Museum
The internationally renowned Mendel Lectures, which are co-organised by the Mendel Museum, have included speeches by a number of laureates of the Nobel Prize. Other successful talks encompass sciences of both organic and inorganic matter or the humanities in the so-called Seminar Series or in the Mendel Days, a newly established annual autumn festival. Each year, the museum organises lectures for the general public on Rare Disease Day. The organisation also publishes various scholarly books in collaboration with the university imprint, MUNIPRESS.
Discover the story of the founder of genetics – G. J. Mendel
In July 2016 the Mendel Museum opened its exhibition titled Gregor Johann Mendel – The Story of a Humble Genius, which combines modern technologies with its historical premises. It unveils the genius of a man who was ahead of his time. Despite the demanding duties of a member and abbot of the Augustinian order, he used every moment of free time to help society through his research, be it his famous pea experiments, meteorology, or beekeeping.
The exhibition features original objects that belonged to the “Father of Genetics”, his school reports, books, or teaching aids. The crowning piece of the display is Mendel’s seminal work, Versuche über Pflanzenhybriden (Experiments with Plant Hybrids).
