Gregor Mendel died 140 years ago

Today marks the 140th anniversary of Gregor Mendel's death.

The scientist, abbot and founder of genetics died in the monastery in Old Brno on 6 January 1884. In the last years of his life, he suffered from several health problems, and in 1883 he fell seriously ill. Mendel is buried in the Augustinian tomb in the Central Cemetery in Brno.

Gregor Mendel is still remembered around the world as an icon of science and the "father of genetics".
